Europe's first-timer preparation is a decision tree, not a checklist: how many cities (two), which pair (rail-linked), how long (seven days), and what to book (flights, trains, two hotels). This guide is the tree.

Generate your Paris plan →The Two-City Rule
Two cities, three-to-four nights each, joined by a rail leg under four hours. The proven pairs: London–Paris, Paris–Rome, Barcelona–Madrid, Amsterdam–Paris. Never five cities in seven days — the most common and expensive first-timer mistake.
- London–Paris for the easiest logistics.
- Paris–Rome for the art-and-food jackpot.
- Barcelona–Madrid for the tapas-and-Gaudí version.
The Schengen Clock
The Schengen zone grants 90 days in any 180 across most of Europe. A two-week trip uses 14 — no issue for first-timers, but long trips should track it.
The Booking Order
Flights first (open-jaw if the pair allows), intercity trains second (2–3 months out), hotels third (6–10 weeks for June and September), museum slots last. Pack one carry-on — the seven-cities'-worth-of-luggage trip is the other classic mistake.
The Booking Sequence
In order, once.
Day 1 · The sequence
Flights → trains → hotels → museum slots. One carry-on. Done.

Frequently asked questions
How many cities for a first Europe trip?
Two. Three if close together. Never five — the five-city week is the classic regret.
Which pair?
London–Paris for logistics, Paris–Rome for the jackpot. Both proven thousands of times.
Rail pass or tickets?
Point-to-point tickets, booked early — passes lose on fixed two-city itineraries.
