Japan's first-timer preparation is the most valuable hour in travel planning: the Suica setup, the Golden Route decision, the onsen and tattoo rules, the konbini economy, and the rail-pass verdict (usually no). This guide is the hour.

The Setup

Suica on the phone before departure; a Google Fi or eSIM data plan; the Golden Route booking (Tokyo 3 → Hakone 1 → Kyoto 2 → Osaka 1); and one carry-on — the takkyubin luggage-shipping service moves bags between hotels for ¥2,000–2,500.

  • Suica on the phone from day one.
  • The Golden Route as the first-trip shape.
  • Takkyubin ships the big bag — travel with a daypack.

The Onsen Rules

Onsen are nude, sex-separated, and wash-before-you-soak. Tattoos: increasingly accepted, still refused at some houses — check ahead or book private-family baths (kashikiri). Small towels never enter the water.

The Rail-Pass Verdict

The nationwide JR Pass repriced ~70% in 2023 and loses on the Golden Route — point-to-point (Tokyo–Odawara, Odawara–Kyoto, Kyoto–Osaka ≈ ¥25,000 total) beats the ¥50,000 pass. Regional passes win on specific routes; price your actual itinerary.

Suica loaded, the Narita Express in, Asakusa at dusk, konbini dinner.

Practical planning info

Money

  • ✓Tokyo ~$120/day, Kyoto ~$140, Osaka ~$110 at planning figures.
  • ✓Cash reserve ¥15,000 for markets and small shops.

Etiquette

  • ✓No calls on trains; shoes off where floors rise.
  • ✓Wash before the onsen soak; tattoos vary by house.

Frequently asked questions

▸Do I need the JR Pass?

Rarely on the Golden Route since the 2023 reprice — point-to-point is cheaper. Price your itinerary.

▸Can I use tattoos at the onsen?

Increasingly yes; some houses still refuse. Book private baths (kashikiri) as the safe route.

▸How do I ship luggage between hotels?

Takkyubin (Yamato) — any hotel front desk sends bags overnight for ¥2,000–2,500. It's why Japan packs light.
