north americatravel guide

North America's planning rule is regional: two weeks equals two regions — the Northeast triangle by rail, the Southwest's canyon loop by car, Canada's east or the Rockies. Planning figures: $150–200/day in the cities, with the park pass and the tipping economy as constants.

The proven regions: the Northeast (NYC–Boston–DC), the Southwest (Las Vegas–Zion–Bryce–the Grand Canyon), California (SF–Yosemite–the coast–LA), Canada's east (Toronto–Montréal–Québec) and the Rockies (Banff–Jasper).

The Regions

Each region is a self-contained two-week trip: the Northeast by Amtrak, the Southwest by rental car, California's coastal loop, Canada's east by Via Rail, the Rockies by car from Calgary. Mixing two is the maximum at two weeks.

  • Northeast: NYC 4 → Boston 2 → DC 3.
  • Southwest: Vegas → Zion → Bryce → Page → the Grand Canyon.
  • California: SF 3 → Yosemite 2 → the coast 2 → LA 3.
  • Canada east: Toronto 3 → Montréal 3 → Québec 2.

The Constants

The $80 America the Beautiful pass covers the national parks year-long. Tipping 18–20% is structural. Domestic flights are the inter-region bridges; the rail covers the Northeast corridor only.
